Recovering, refelting, and a look at the bed while it is uncovered.
Cloth wears in the places the game puts it: the break spot, the rails where hands rest, and the pocket mouths. Recovering strips the old cloth from the bed and the rails, which is the only time the slate is fully visible, and that is when seams, bolts and cushion rubber get looked at rather than guessed about.
New cloth on a bed that has drifted out of level is wasted money, so the levelling is done while the table is bare.
Choosing cloth
The choice is mostly woollen against worsted, and it changes how the table plays.
- Woollen cloth has a nap and plays slower. It is the usual choice for a family room table and it hides marks well.
- Worsted cloth is smooth and faster, and it is what you will have played on in a pool hall. Balls run further, so a table that already plays fast gets faster.
- Colour is yours to pick, though darker colours show chalk less and lighter ones show wear sooner.
- Cushion rubber can be replaced at the same visit, which is worth doing if balls are dying off the rails instead of coming back.

Before the crew leaves
Levelling is part of the job, not an extra. The bed is checked across the seams and at each pocket before the tools are packed away, and the crew will not leave a table that rolls off.
